Sheriff Mike Ellis

Mike Ellis grew up in the Flintstone community of Walker County Georgia and graduated from Chattanooga Valley High School. Mike and his father “Babe” Ellis operated a service station on Mission Ridge Road which was well known in Walker County for many years.

In 1974 Mike became a Trooper with the Georgia State Patrol and left that agency in 1979 to prepare to run for Sheriff in 1980. Sheriff Ralph Jones was re-elected in 1980 however, and Mike went into business for himself after the election. In 1984 Mike ran for Sheriff again, was elected and became the first Republican elected official in Walker County’s history.

Upon taking office Sheriff Ellis set about the task of modernizing and upgrading the department’s equipment, operating methods, and command structure. He purchased badly needed equipment, increased the size of the Road Patrol and Detective Divisions, and began the process of computerizing the department’s operations.  Before leaving office he oversaw the construction of a new sheriff’s office and detention facility, replacing the old building which had been in use since 1957.

Sheriff Ellis served from January 1, 1985 until December 31, 1989. He and his wife Terri currently live in Chickamauga where he is President and CEO of Consolidated Business Management, Inc.
