Sheriff Steve Wilson

Steve Wilson is a lifelong resident of the Lafayette area and graduated from Lafayette High School in 1975. The next year he began working for the FBI in Washington DC as a fingerprint examiner. After 3 ½ years with the FBI he returned home and worked as a patrolman for the Lafayette Police Department until 1986, when he joined the Walker County Sheriff’s Office.

Serving under Sheriffs Ellis and Millard, Steve rose through the ranks of the Sheriff’s Office holding the positions of Patrol Deputy, Detective, and Assistant Commander of the Lookout Mountain Judicial Circuit Drug Task Force. When the GBI relinquished command of the drug task force to local control in 1993, Steve was appointed as the first local commander of the Lookout Mountain Drug Task Force.

Steve took a leave of absence from the Sheriff’s Office in 1996 to run for Sheriff, and was elected that November. He took office on January 1, 1997 and was reelected in 2000, 2004, and 2008. He is the second longest serving Sheriff in Walker County’s history.
